This is how the theory course begins. Four short steps, straight from the app: learn the pattern of the black keys, use it to find C, F and D, then read the first five notes off the stave and play them.

Every scale, in every key.

The scale book has each one with its fingering and the notes spelled properly. Technique gets a path of its own, in the order the hand is usually built.

Seventy-nine short units in twelve stages. It starts before Grade 1, at the black keys, and ends with the chromatic harmony of Grade 8: the augmented sixths and the Neapolitan. A checkpoint lets you skip what you already know, and the opening stages are free.

Questions

When can I get ClearyKeys?
It’s coming to Google Play first. Leave your email or follow @clearykeys and you’ll hear the day it’s out.
Is there an iPhone version?
An App Store version will follow the Android release.
Does it need the internet?
No. Every tool and every sound is inside the app. The only time it connects is to Google Play, when you subscribe or when it checks your subscription.
Do I need a piano?
You need a piano or keyboard to practise on. ClearyKeys plans and times the session and gives you the material; it doesn’t listen to you and mark your playing. The on-screen keyboard is for answering theory and ear questions.
Which grades does it follow?
Levels follow the graded exams used in the UK and Ireland, Prep to Grade 8, with diploma levels above and postgraduate at the top. You don’t need to be sitting exams to use it.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. There are no ads and no chat, and Premium purchases go through Google Play, where family approval works as usual.
Can teachers use it with students?
Yes. Use it in lessons to generate sight reading or show an exercise, and set students up with a plan for the week.
How do I cancel Premium?
In the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. Premium stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for. The subscription terms have the details.
What happens to my data?
It stays on your phone. The privacy policy sets out what the app stores, what Google Play handles when you subscribe, and your rights under the GDPR.
